Swordsmith Cosplay

Progression of ‘cosplaying’ a character

Cosplay, a portmanteau of "costume play", is an activity and performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character.

meet ‘hotaru haganezuka’, a swordsmith from a japanese tv show

His mask is his most defining feature and sparks so much joy whenever he pops up in the show

I used air-dry clay to get a realistic clay mask look

After three days it cracked..

things don’t go as planned and there was only less than 2 weeks left

After two failed attempts of trying to make this from clay, I had to throw in plan B

Adhering the nine separate 3D printed pieces with PL9000

Obligatory Selfie

Textured spray paint and Bondo

Making the samurai, ‘sandogasa’ hat, from scratch with whatever I had. Weathering it with some acrylics and dry brushing was fun

Painting the mask was satisfying

Borrowed a buddy’s shop to create the geta, traditional Japanese sandals

We used a soft wood since it was the only scrap he had. It makes a satisfying sound as you walk around.

Arrived at the convention and immediately had photos taken

it was an incredibly tiring day, ran into problems, smiled through it all,

and would recommend it to anyone that hasn’t tried it before

Thank you for taking the time to look through this two week speed-run cosplay!
